The Albanese Government has marked National Forestry Day with a $19 million investment in Australia’s timber future, announcing 15 new plantation projects across five states and territories. Funded through Round 3 of the Support Plantation Establishment Program (SPEP), the projects will expand sustainable timber resources in New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and—making its first appearance in the program—the Northern Territory.

The latest round of funding brings the total area planted under SPEP to approximately 25,000 hectares, with more than $46 million allocated to date from the $73 million initiative: “This is about securing a Future Made in Australia,” said Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins. “These plantations will grow the timber we need for housing, manufacturing, and climate action—while unlocking jobs and strengthening regional economies.”

Wood Central understands that SPEP supports the establishment of long-rotation softwood and hardwood plantations to meet rising demand for domestically sourced timber. The program forms part of the Albanese Government’s broader $300 million investment in sustainable forestry, which includes funding for research, workforce development, and industry innovation. Applications for Round 3, Batch 5 of SPEP remain open until 24 September 2025. Eligible applicants include private industry, First Nations businesses, farm foresters, and state and territory government forestry bodies.

The announcement was welcomed by the Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA), which has long advocated for increased support for plantation expansion. “We welcome this announcement on National Forestry Day to strengthen our sovereign capability in an essential resource,” according to Richard Hyett, AFPA’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

“Global demand for timber and wood fibre is expected to quadruple by 2050. Australia must ensure it has sustainable resources growing in the ground to meet that challenge.” Hyett also acknowledged Minister Collins’ continued support for the sector. “She understands the importance of sustainable timber and wood-fibre for the climate, environment, and our full supply chain.”
