Walmart’s new “Home Office” – the enormous project that used more than 1.5 million cubic feet of timber and led to the world’s largest retailer acquiring a stake in a mass timber factory will be one of the projects showcased at the International Mass Timber Construction Conference, kicking off March 24 in Portland, Oregon.
Covered by Wood Central last month, the project – North America’s largest timber campus development under construction – serves as a prime environment to understand all that mass timber has to offer – through design, engineering and construction.
Slatted for the final day, Robert Grove, technical director at Gensler (the architect responsible for the project), Carla Dickof, associate principal and director of research and development for Fast + Epp (its structural engineer), and Dan Dumke, director at Shawmut Design and Construction (the builder) will share their findings, from time and cost savings to procurement considerations to the critical need for collaboration.
Now in its ninth year, the International Mass Timber Conference – from March 25-27, 2025, will see up to 3,500 delegates attend the world’s largest mass timber conference and exhibition:
“Each year, we are relentless in our pursuit of improvement, refining the conference to ensure attendees receive maximum value for their investment,” said Craig Rawlings, President and CEO of the conference. “Our mission is to create the world’s premier event where professionals can forge meaningful connections, close deals, and accelerate their projects more efficiently than anywhere else.”
Last year, Wood Central spoke to Shelby Snelson, conference organiser, who said the conference team “couldn’t wait to welcome our overseas friends,” adding that all travellers will see the Portland International Airport’s new timber roof in person.
More than 2,700 delegates from across the world attended last year’s conference, including Sydney-based Andrew Dunn, who flew to Portland as a special guest of the APA—Engineered Wood Association. “The “enormous trade show (made up of 190+ exhibitors) is a mass timber enthusiast dream,” Mr Dunn said.
