One of Australia’s largest structural timber producers is expanding into the West, with the Hyne Group securing Pinetec—the company’s first acquisition in Western Australia in its 142-year history.

The Perth-based pallet and packaging business, now subject to precedents being met, comes as Hyne establishes itself as a major player in Australia’s cross-country pallet supply chain – following the acquisition of Melbourne-based Rodpak and Queensland-based Express Pallets and Crates earlier this year – now part of a newly established “Hyne Pallets.”

Wood Central understands that the new deal is part of a longer-term strategy where Hyne works with pallet customers and strategic partners looking to exit or manage its succession planning.

Earlier this year, Hyne established the Hyne Pallets division

According to Jim Bindon, Hyne Group CEO, Pinetech will operate business as usual, continuing to service customers in mining, industrial chemicals, engineering, building products, and transport—but will benefit from being part of a global network – through the group’s majority owner, James Jones and Sons Ltd.

“This expansion of our pallet division into the West is exciting times for both the Hyne Group and Pinetec,” Mr Bindon said. “I am also pleased to advise that the two previous shareholders of the Pinetec business will remain involved in the Hyne Pallets division, as will all the existing staff.”

“One of those shareholders, Ian Smith, is the Pinetec General Manager, and I welcome his continued expertise and support in this role.” The other is Dean Roderick – the General Manager of Rodpak, who, in May 2024, became part of the Hyne Pallets management team.

Reflecting on the deal, Mr Roderick said selling his and Mr Smith’s Pinetec business to the Hyne Group represents an exciting new phase: “With Pinetec coming into the Hyne Group fold, it is no longer a stand-alone business but immediately part of a global family with the ability to leverage from that, as we have been able to do at Rodpak,” Mr Smith said.

“Not only does this present good opportunities for our team members, customers and suppliers, but it further diversifies the Hyne Group geographic footprint to ensure efficiency and growth.”

About the Hyne Group

Hyne Timber was established in 1882 and operates a range of large-scale softwood sawmills and engineered wood products manufacturing assets, including Australia’s first Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) processing facility.

In 2022, during its 140th year, it announced a major partnership with UK-based timber giants James Jones and Sons Ltd, becoming the majority owner of the Hyne Group.

And in 2023, it announced a partnership with Rocky Point, a landscaping products business in Yatala, Queensland, of which the Hyne Group is now the majority owner. In 2024, Rocky Point acquired Bassett Barks, a landscaping company based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
