The Maleny Wood Expo, a massive woodwork exhibition held on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, is scheduled for the long weekend April 29 to May 1.
This expo promotes the sustainable use of native wood and provide a fun country event suitable for the whole family in the Blackall ranges.
The fun event hosts a range of exhibitions and demonstrations, including wood workshop classes for adults, hand-held carving, weaving with cat’s claw, diddleybow workshop and using simple gools for simple techniques.
Classes for children includes the Cool Stool School event where the kids can get hands-on wood-making experience and the Kids Space Program where they can build a toolbox to take home.
Maleny Wood Expo also features the largest woodworking prize in Australia – the Wootha Prize ‘Open + Shut’. Entrants will showcase their exquisite woodworks in the form of sculptures, furniture artwork and many other materials fashioned from timber. And expo visitors get the chance to be treated to a rare and more exciting scene of seeing the woodworkers in action.
Make sure you stop and watch the chainsaw woodcarvers in action as they craft a masterpiece out of a chunk of wood. The amount of detail that can be achieved will amaze you.
The expo will be held at the Maleny showgrounds,13 Maleny-Stanley River Road, just 1km from the centre of town.
Gates open 8.30 am to 4 pm. Costs are adult 1 day $25; concessions: $20 (at gate with relevant ID; children and youths under 16 free when accompanied by an adult; adult multi-day pass $35 (no limit on days, no concession price on multi-day pass).
Carers need to present their card and the ticket of the person for whom they are caring at the entry gate.
All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Parking is limited at the showgrounds for a gold coin donation. All proceeds will go to Rotary Maleny.
Many of the workshop tickets will be available for pre-purchase online and a lot of them sell out in the leadup to the expo so it’s recommended you purchase tickets in advance. Most workshop tickets include a one-day or multi-day pass depending on the duration of the workshop.
