SPEC Toolbox has secured an additional $3 million in funding, strengthening the Melbourne‑based construction engineering platform’s push into global markets and expanding its reach far beyond its origins in cross‑laminated timber design.

Founded by Adam Jones and Ringo Thomas, the platform began as CLT Toolbox, a specialist tool for mass‑timber design, before the pair rebranded to SPEC Toolbox after identifying similar design bottlenecks across a broader range of modern manufactured construction materials. Wood Central understands that the platform now automates complex engineering workflows, helping designers specify innovative, low‑carbon building systems more efficiently.

The latest investment continues a steady funding trajectory, following a $1 million bridge round in 2024 and a $1.5 million Seed round in October 2023. SPEC’s investor base now includes Giant Leap, Archangel, Ecotone, Australian Venture Partners, Impact Ventures, Understorey, Flying Fox, Gravel Road, Exhort, Electrifi and Energy Lab.

Jones said the new capital validates SPEC’s approach to addressing affordability and sustainability challenges in construction. “With these funds, we’re accelerating our product roadmap, onboarding new suppliers in new product categories, deepening existing technical infrastructure and accelerating our mission to make innovation easy to specify for engineers,” he said.

In a statement posted on its LinkedIn account, SPEC Toolbox said it is focused on tackling what it calls the “SPEC gap,” describing it as a key bottleneck to innovation: “We’re pouring everything we’ve got into solving this to improve the construction industry. We want better options for designers and a level playing field where products stand on merit.”

“Most would say that it’s difficult to have competing suppliers listed next to each other. However, it’s the industry’s intent to collaborate with a ‘grow the pie’ mindset that makes this space so special.”

“This funding enables us to take things to the next level in bridging the gap between innovative product suppliers and engineers who are excited to design differently. We also have a major product roadmap being worked on behind the scenes that we’re excited to unveil.”

According to Ben Lindsay, Investible principal, early customer traction is encouraging: “We’ve been fortunate to watch Adam and Ringo over the past 12 months as they first captured a clearly defined cross‑laminated timber niche and are now thoughtfully expanding into the much larger manufactured products market.”

Since its 2024 Seed round, SPEC Toolbox has expanded into Europe, the UK, and North America, and now reports more than 6,000 user signups and 35 product suppliers.
