“We begin by carefully selecting materials that are not only beautiful but also harvested in an environmentally responsible manner.”
Tasmanian wood craftsman Ian Hewitt adds: “We continually explore new materials and methods that reduce our environmental impact without compromising quality or design – from using non-toxic finishes to implementing energy-efficient production techniques.”
With more than 30 years of fine woodworking experience and a commitment to the natural environment, Ian, who runs Axiom Lighting Studio in northern Tasmania, has embraced Wood Connect, the conduit to the custodians of sustainable timber such as Responsible Wood, the Australian arm of PEFC International, the world’s largest forest certification system.
The studio, in an appropriate bush setting overlooking the Tamar River Estuary, creates timber veneer lighting crafted from timbers such as Tasmanian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) and premium Bird’s Eye Huon pine.
Tasmanian blackwood is grown in wetter areas in Tasmania, and trees reach heights up to 40 mm. The heartwood is rich golden brown; its grain can be either straight or have a wavy fiddleback pattern that is highly valued for veneers.
The Hydrowood Collection, made of timber salvaged from the depths of Tasmanian lakes, offers a second life to what was once lost.
Hydrowood is one of Australia’s most ambitious forestry projects. It created history by delving deep below the waters of Lake Pieman to resurrect the precious timbers below. Veneers were meticulously sliced from logs salvaged from Lake Gordon during the construction of the Gordon Dam in the 1970s.
Bought by tender from Forestry Tasmania in the 1980s, the logs were expertly sliced to the Burnie veneer mill. This project has unlocked supplies of specialty timbers so scarce that they were thought to be almost lost forever. Species such as Tasmanian myrtle, sassafras and even the legendary Huon pine are now, once again, available in quantity.
“This reclaimed timber is part of our sustainable sourcing strategy – it not only recovers lost treasures but also aligns with our ethos of environmental respect and innovation, ensuring each creation carries a legacy of conservation and unique beauty.”
Ian Hewitt, Tasmanian wood craftsman and studio manager for Axiom Lighting Studio.
Axiom’s approach to sustainable sourcing reflects a broader commitment to responsible design – working with responsible wood.
“By choosing materials and methods that prioritise the planet’s health, we aim to inspire a shift towards more sustainable practices within the design community and beyond,” Ian said. “Our creations are more than just lighting solutions; they are beacons of hope for a future where luxury and sustainability go hand in hand.”
