Indonesian-based PT Riau Andalan Paperboard International—a subsidiary of the APRIL group—has been recognised at the Packindo Star Awards 2024. It won the PEFC Forest-Positive Packaging Award in the commercial category for its innovative, PEFC-certified sustainable Eco-Hex packaging.
Used in a multitude of high-end pharmaceutical products, the fibre-based packaging is part of a growing number of products that now carry PEFC certification. PEFC is the world’s leading sustainable forest management certification system, with millions of packages worldwide bearing PEFC certification on their packaging.
Through the PEFC chain of custody certification, packaging can be traced from the forest, in the mill and at every stage of the supply chain. Speaking about the awards, Wikkie Netten, Marketing Manager PEFC Asia-Pacific, said that PEFC is committed to promoting sustainable practices throughout the forestry supply chain:
The Eco-Hex is a product of PT Riau Andalan Paperboard International’s commitment to certified fibre-based packaging and is one of the industry’s fastest-growing products. It is crafted from Board One folding box board, a material known for its exceptional print quality and durability.
How many products now carry PEFC certification?
Wood Central understands that PEFC (and FSC) certification and labels are now proudly displayed on a huge range of products, from tissues, toilet paper and notebooks to wooden flooring, bookshelves and your garden shed. “And of course, don’t forget the packaging: tea bags, cereal, rice, and so much more are all available in PEFC-certified packaging,” a representative from PEFC International said.
“When you see the PEFC label on a product, it means that it comes from a PEFC-certified forest (obviously, only the forest-based material within the product). A PEFC-certified forest is a forest that is managed in line with the strictest environmental, social and economic requirements. A forest that will be around for generations to come.”
“Through PEFC certification, we can track the material from these forests, down the supply chain, to the final product that you buy. The mechanism to track the material is called chain of custody certification. Beyond ensuring that the material comes from a certified forest, it also protects the rights of workers along the production process.”
