The peak conference for timber engineering, the World Conference on Timber Engineering, is an opportunity to showcase Australia’s research and development status and expertise in wood product design and durability on a global scale.
Scheduled to be hosted in Brisbane in June 2025, WCTE 2025 chair Professor Keith Crews exclusively revealed to Wood Central that the conference builds a significant platform for networking with internationally recognised research groups across various timber design fields.
“The conference will highlight the advances and carbon benefits of timber construction, particularly for Queensland government stakeholders as they plan the 2032 Olympic venues and athlete accommodation,” Professor Crews said.
It comes after Wood Central reported that the new Queensland Premier, Steven Miles, committed to building “cleaner, greener and more sustainable” infrastructure as part of a broader commitment to using low-carbon construction materials in buildings.
The University of Queensland, along with the support of the ARC Advance Timber Hub, will host the event, which this year attracted more than 850 delegates in Oslo, Norway.
WCTE 2025 chair Professor Crews is also director of the newly-formed Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Research Hub to Advance Timber for Australia’s Future Built Environment (ARC Advance Timber Hub) administered by the University of Queensland.
The conference committee invites authors to submit two-page abstracts/ mini papers by April 30 next year.
Submissions are sought for oral and poster presentations addressing the principal conference theme – ‘Advancing Timber for the Future Built Environment’.
The technical program will focus on the importance of research and development undertaken by the timber design and construction community in response to the increased demand from engineering and architectural firms, developers and investors who now emphasise timber engineering as a preferred solution for many projects.
Chosen themes for WCTE 2025 include:
- Material performance and durability.
- Sustainability and timber in a circular economy.
- Timber engineering and structural performance.
- Timber architecture and biophilic design.
- Education, innovation and challenges.
- Exemplars and construction case studies.
